Faithful Reader
Posted by: Angie in A View from the Loft, tags: devotions, faithful, God's Word, Nancy DrewI was a faithful reader. Truly and utterly devoted. Ever since that long summer before sixth grade when my mom kicked my siblings and I out of the house and told us to go read. I didn’t have many choices except the series my aunt had given me. Those books sat on my book shelf for a year before I discovered the treasure inside. That summer, sitting under a tree, I opened my first mystery book and was hooked. That’s right, I was addicted to Nancy Drew. So addicted to her that I read every yellow, hard back novel my aunt gave me that school year. When I ran out of those, I borrowed them from the library. The next thing I knew, I was going to the thrift store or yard sale just to see if I could find another book to add to my collection. Even when my parents would give us some money and set us loose at the local flea market, I would head to find people who sold books. I would sift through their books piles in hopes of finding another one to take home. I loved the Nancy Drew mysteries.
Now, as an adult, I want to be a faithful reader once again. Not to Nancy Drew this time. This time it’s a greater mystery. One with a better story and a happier ending. I want to become addicted to the Word of God. This time my challenge is to sift through the pages of my bible and discover what God has to say to me. To spend time in the Word so I can get to know the Word more.
I Thessalonians 5:24 tells us that “Faithful is he that calls you.” God is a faithful God and he knows that life is full of many things which can try and take priority over our quiet time with him. Our families, our jobs, our housework. These things can make it hard to be faithful readers. He’s already given us the answers for our day to day combat in his Word. It’s just up to us to let go of life’s demands and dedicate time to finding out what God wants us to know. I’ve decided it’s time to be a faithful reader once again. What about you?
Remember, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Romans 15:4, KJV)
And, just so you know, I do still have my Nancy Drew collection.
